The one thing we store

The footer carries a control that turns background motion on and off. If you use it, your choice is saved in your browser’s local storage:

• Name: hubiq-motion
• Value: on or off, and nothing else
• Set when: you press the control. Never on page load.
• Expires: when you clear your browser data

It holds no identifier, it is never sent to us or to anyone else, and only this website can read it. If you never touch the control, nothing is written at all.

What we do not store

No cookies, first party or third party. No tracking pixels, no advertising tags, no session identifiers, no fingerprinting and no cross-site tracking. Nothing that follows you to another website, and nothing that can identify you by name.

Why there is no consent banner

PECR regulation 6 requires your permission before a website stores information on your device, or reads information already stored there. That rule is technology-neutral: it covers local storage just as it covers cookies, which is why this page is about both.

Regulation 6(4) exempts storage that is strictly necessary to provide a service you have explicitly asked for. The motion setting exists only because you pressed a control asking for it, and saving it is the only way to honour that choice on your next page. We consider it exempt on that basis, so there is nothing to consent to and no banner to dismiss.

Reasonable people can draw that line differently. If you would rather it were not stored, do not use the control, or clear your browser data afterwards. The site works either way, and it already respects your operating system’s reduced-motion setting without you doing anything.

How we count visits

We use Vercel Web Analytics, which is cookieless and stores nothing on your device. Vercel creates a hash from your incoming request so it can tell a returning visitor from a new one, then discards it after 24 hours. It records the page, the page you arrived from, your approximate location to city level, and your browser, operating system and device type.

Because it stores nothing on your device and reads nothing from it, regulation 6 does not apply. The privacy notice covers the data protection side of this, including the lawful basis.

The embedded video

The Our story page carries a TED talk. It does not load when the page opens. You see a still image and a play button, and nothing is requested from TED until you press it.

If you press play, TED sets their own cookies and receives your IP address, under their terms rather than ours. The button says so before you press it. If you never press play, TED never hears from you.

Our internal pages

For completeness: we host a small number of unlisted reference pages for our own team, which are not linked from this site and are not meant for visitors. One of them saves a display preference in local storage in the same way the motion control does. Nothing on those pages tracks anyone or reports back to us.

If this changes

If we add anything that sets a cookie, or that stores or reads data on your device beyond the setting described above, we will update this page before it goes live and ask for consent where consent is required.
